The Portage Voyageurs were able to beat the MacEwan Griffins in two big games this past weekend, winning 4-1 on home ice Friday and 4-3 Saturday in Edmonton.
Friday night was the first home game of the season for the Voyageurs, but it was the Griffins who struck first, Mike Fiorillo scored in the first period on the Power-play to get MacEwan up 1-0 before Spencer Brooks added a short-handed tally for the home squad.
Cody Mapes had two goals, including the game winner, Chris Glen also added a third period goal.
Voyageurs starter Scott Orth made big saves when needed, including one at the end of the 2nd and another at the start of the 3rd.
On Saturday night the Voyageurs were able to jump off the bus and onto a victory as they dropped the same Griffins 4-3, Second year goalie Evan Kurlyo made 32 saves in the win as the Voyageurs were out-shot on the road.
Reid Mitchell, Matt Gray, Chris Glen and Ian Hall had the Portage goals.
The Voyageurs have a tough test this weekend, as they trek down to Calgary to face-off with the 2-time defending champs, the SAIT Trojans.
