The Voyageurs officially opened up their 3rd season in the ACAC this past weekend; the Concordia Thunder were their hosts in Edmonton Friday; Concorida took the win by a score of 4-2.
The Thunder lead 4-0 in the third period before the Voyageurs made it close, Cody Mapes and Cory Giroux had the Portage goals, new goaltender Dallas Ungarian made 39 saves in a losing effort.
On Friday night the Voyageurs played their home opener back in Lac La Biche and made up for their lackluster effort in Edmonton the night before. The Voyageurs lead 5-0 after the 1st period and at one point had 5 goals on 10 shots, Jackson Wilson, Taylor Morgan, Matt Gray, Matt Foster and Kyle Peden all scored in the 1st.
Portage had the lead 6-1 in the second period when the game took a turn for the ugly, Voyageur foward Jeremy Weasel Mocasin collided with Concordia forward Mackenzie Groenwegen at the side of the Thunder goal and Groenwegen was knocked unconscious; he was later taken to hospital after several quiet minutes at the rink.
Concordia responded by jumping several Voyageurs including Chris Glen, Miles Houston fought later in the second period as did Weasel Mocasin.
The Voyageurs got the win on home ice by a score of 8-5, Concordia scored three goals in the third but were never able to make it a close game, other Voyageur goals came from Kyle Peden, Leo Keefer and Taylor Morgan.
Voyageurs host MacEwan on Friday.
