Voyageurs looking to rebound after two losses in Calgary

The team was aware heading into the weekend that their 2 game set in Calgary against the Mount Royal Cougars could be one of the toughest weekends of the schedule, it proved to be nothing less for the visiting team from Lac La Biche County as they lost both games on unfriendly ice.

The weekend was abnormal from the very start as the Voyageurs bus to Calgary left an hour and a half later than schedualed, leaving the team with less time than planned before Friday's game.

The Voyageurs were in good position to grab at least one point on Friday with 5 minutes left in the game and a 2-2 tie, Dustin Popowich and Matt Foster had scored in the first and second periods respectively.

It wasn't meant to be for the blue and green as a late Voyageur cross-checking penalty came back to haunt them as the Cougars took the lead late in the game, sealing the victory with an insurance goal a few minutes later.

Voyageur goaltender Justin Borsa was credited with 30 saves in what was credited as a excellent effort by Voyageur Coach Terry Ewasiuk.

Game 2 in Calgary was an afternoon game that saw the Voyageurs lose by a margin of 7-0.

The game started well for Portage as they had three different break-away chances but were unable to capitalize on any of them, leaving the 1st period down 1-0.

Voyageur goaltender Dallas Ungurian was relieved in the second period after the Cougars added to thier lead making it 5-0, Justin Borsa finished the game allowing two goals himself.

The Cougars outshot the Voyageurs 46-26 in the game, leaving the Portage squad to look forward to their next two games, both in Saskatchewan.

The Voyageurs play Friday and Saturday in Caronport against the Briercrest Clippers.

  1. Happened to be at those games. Portage wasn't just playing against MRC, the refs in both games were also playing for MRC unfortunately. Tough when it's two teams against one. Not saying we didn't deserve the penalties we got, just that MRC could have had a few (or more than a few) of their own. Looking forward to this upcoming weekend.
