It was a tough weekend back from the Holiday break as the Voyageurs were forced to play a home and home with the MacEwan Griffins, with the second game as the opening of the Bold Center.
In the first game in Edmonton the Voyageurs were able to carry a 4-2 lead into the 3rd period of play only to lose that lead; and the game by a score of 5-4.
Coach Terry Ewasiuk had mentioned that it was rather obvious that some of his players had a hard time focusing on the game knowing that the opening of the Bold Center was less than 24 hours away.
Matt Gray, Matt Foster, Chris Glen and Gerald Desjerlais had the Voyageur goals, Justin Borsa made 25 saves in a losing effort.
On Saturday evening over 1,100 Lac La Biche faithfull jammed into the brand new Bold Center to watch the Voyageurs play their first game in the new rink, and their first game on home ice in 2011.
The first two periods were very even and quite eventful as the teams were tied after both the 1st and 2nd periods, Matt Gray and Cody Mapes had the first two Voyageur goals.
In the third frame the Voyageurs were able to pull away with it, a big goal by Dustin Popowich in front of the net gave them the 3-2 lead and the home team never looked back, winning 5-2.
Cory Giroux and Matt Foster also scored, Giroux was named player of the game.
Dallas Ungurian was forced too make only 16 saves in the Portage win.
The Voyageurs head to Calgary this weekend for two games against the SAIT Trojans.
