The Portage Voyageurs went into their final two games of the regular season knowing that their position in the playoffs was sealed, their only incentive was to win both games; which would have made this edition of the Voyageurs the best statistically in their short three year history..It was not meant to be for Portage.
Injuries have been quite the problem this season as the Voyageurs have missed D-men Shawn Shackleton and Kyle Peden for many weeks, they recently lost top defender Kris Steedsman and this past weekend they were also without leading scorer Matt Foster and forward Riley Ferster.
The combination of missing players and lack of motivation added up to a less than impressive final weekend of the season.
On Friday evening in Edmonton the Voyageurs got ready to meet the NAIT Ooks, the Voyageurs were down three goals after only 1 period, Czech Jiri Prochazka had his 1st of 3 in the weekend as NAIT never let go of the lead winning 3-1.
Darryl Gagnon had the only Voyageur tally of the game.
On Saturday afternoon in LLB it didn't get much better for Portage, as they were down 2-0 after the 1st and 4-0 after the 2nd; the final score was 5-0 in favor of the Ooks who took a win away from the Bold Center crowd.
The Voyageurs gave up an un-expected three goals on the penalty kill and were extremely poor on their own man advantages, leading to the lopsidded score.
This weekend the Voyageurs open up the playoffs against Augustana in Camrose, Portage beat the Vikings twice in the last month, 4-3 and 6-5, game #2 will be in LLB saturday at 7pm
